About our OCC

Our OCC operates 24/7 providing high-level communications support to our Districts across NSW in the form of call receipt and dispatch. The centre can accommodate a team of up to 25 operators, who work on a varied and rotating roster, which includes night shifts, weekends, and public holidays.

The OCC team is responsible for receiving, interpreting, and responding to emergency and routine calls for assistance, such as fire-related
incidents, motor vehicle accidents, and oil spills. They also operate the Bush Fire Information Line and AIDER program requests, as well as supporting functions within the State Operations Centre. This requires the dissemination of relevant information, dispatching appropriate resources, and monitoring responses to incidents through effective telephone and radio communication and data entry.

There are three positions available within the OCC:

  • Operational Communications Officer
  • Senior Operational Communications Officer
  • Operational Officer Level 3 (State Operations)

What skills and experience do I need?

A role in our OCC presents a great opportunity to progress through a structured career path in the RFS. 

The following skills and experience would be advantageous to applicants:

  • Volunteer and/or emergency services experience and an understanding of emergency dispatch functions
  • Previous experience using Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) and ICON
  • Understanding of fire mitigation and field operational experience
  • Excellent keyboarding skills with the ability to accurately transcribe auditory information into clear written records

  • You have strong computer and communication skills
  • You have the ability to work on a 12-hour rotating roaster
